Earth's magnetic field acts as a protective bubble, shielding our planet from the constant stream of charged particles from the Sun, known as the solar wind. This region of space dominated by Earth's magnetic properties is called the magnetosphere.
How It Works
Deep inside Earth, the solid iron core generates a magnetic field through a process called the geodynamo. This field extends into space, creating the magnetosphere. The solar wind, a plasma (charged gas) of particles, hits the magnetosphere and is mostly deflected around Earth. At the front, a bow shock forms where the solar wind slows down. On the night side, the magnetosphere stretches into a long magnetotail.
